HEATH/MORRISON: The snapshot above shows the original stretch of the Number Two Highway west of Wardsville in the 1920s. Overlaid above it is a sketch looking in the opposite direction. Commissioned by the Ontario Department of Highways, the famous Canadian artist C.W. Jefferys did a series of similar illustrations as public service announcements to the motoring public in the mid-1920s. The sketch above formed part of one such advertisement, which encouraged drivers to slow down and enjoy the scenery while at the same time warning that it was against the law to exceed the speed limit of 25 miles per hour. “Let the ‘speed hound’ pass, if he insists. Don’t be the one yourself. Remember, the road is yours to use, not to abuse – yours to enjoy, not to destroy.”
The lane pictured in the distant background of Jefferys’ sketch led up to the farm of Charles S. Morrison. This lane also appears in the bottom right of the snapshot. Whether or not the Morrisons knew of Jefferys sketch is unknown.
